Where in your warehouse can you use cantilever racking?

In previous articles, we’ve talked about the difference between racking and shelving and how you can use both types of storage in your warehouse.

If you rely on racking to store large and heavy items, there are lots of different types of racking you can utilise. One of these types is cantilever racking.

In this article, we’re going to explain what cantilever racking is, and how you can optimise your warehouse or factory with it.

What is cantilever racking?

Cantilever racking has a strong steel base and upright columns that support cantilever arms. These arms are what are used to store items.

This means cantilever racking can be utilised to store long and unusually shaped items like tubing and timber, improving warehouse efficiency .

Cantilever racking can be used to store a wide range of items

As we mentioned at the start of the article, the benefit of cantilever racking is that you can use it to store heavy and irregularly sized items safely. As one of the advantages of cantilever racking is that it’s fully customisable, you can adapt it to suit whatever you stock in your warehouse – more about that in a little while.

We’ve seen cantilever racking used to store furniture, metal sheets, pipes, rolls of carpet, and timber… even artificial Christmas trees!

The places you can use cantilever racking in your warehouse

Now that we know a little bit more about cantilever racking, how can it be used in a warehouse environment? Here are some of the different ways you can take advantage of this specialist type of racking.

Outside your warehouse

Made of durable steel and powder-coated to protect against corrosion, cantilever racking is ideal for outdoor storage.

This means you can take advantage of the valuable real estate outside your warehouse, perhaps adding a durable canopy to protect the items stored on the racking.

At high heights in your warehouse

If your warehouse has a high roof, it’s essential to use the space available to you for extra storage.

As cantilever racking has a sturdy base and several upright supports that are reinforced by horizontal bracing pieces, it’s incredibly strong. The result of this is that you can stack your racking as high as you need it, using every square metre of your warehouse space.

Against the walls or in the centre of your warehouse

Cantilever racking comes in single and double-sided variants, meaning you can place it wherever you need it in your warehouse.

Cantilever racking is ideal if you need adaptability in your warehouse

One of the things that is great about cantilever racking is that it’s a very flexible type of storage. This means if you see a lot of different kinds of products pass through your warehouse, installing cantilever racking could be a sensible choice.

For example, you can install cantilever racking that has adjustable arms. This means you can adjust the length or angle of the arms to suit the items the racking needs to hold.

You can even use cantilever racking to store pallets, although as the arms are narrow, it means you can’t store too many of them at a time! If you have a lot of pallets to store, we would recommend installing dedicated pallet racking.

Is cantilever racking the right choice for my warehouse?

It depends on what you need to store. If you stock small or regularly-sized items, it might be that pallet racking, or even shelving, is a better option.

However, if you need a sturdy storage solution that can easily handle unusually shaped products, then cantilever racking may be a perfect choice.

If you’re not sure if cantilever racking is ideal for your warehouse space, we’re more than happy to take a look for you.
